When it comes to writing a résumé , we all do get a
little nervous and that’s perfectly obvious. After all it’s our first chance
and probably the only chance of influencing our employer.
Or for more on drafting cover letters keep
following this post.
Well, if you have got to write a Résumé . First thing
you need to do is relax. With few things kept in mind it’s not a tough deal to
draft an impressive résumé .
1.
Be Original
Well, all of
us tend to search for some good résumé layout over internet. You can even get real
impressive stuffs for few bucks out of your pocket on many sites. There is no
harm looking for good layouts but at the end of day you must realize it’s the content
not the layout that’s going to work for you. So prefer your original ideas over
any copy paste material.
2.
Be specific
Most of us
commit this mistake. We forget to think of our employer. Don’t you think the
profile for a Software Engineer is different from that of a Cartoon-maker? Well
if the job is different so should be the approach. Therefore the résumé for both the purpose should be different. Next
time you sit for writing your résumé , consider your job and employer. Mention
things only those are common to you and your employer.
3.
Have things ready
Well, I am
not saying all your achievements are worth mentioning in a résumé . But still
in order to avoid missing any good point and regretting later, it’s always good
to prepare beforehand a list of all things that may matter.
4.
What really makes difference?
You might
better know what among your qualification matters and what is worth keeping.
Every experience, every training, every seminar that you attended can be
useful. I will not discuss much about that here as that may vary from person to
person.
Apart from
your qualifications and achievements there are few things need to be taken extra
care of.
a.
Don’t make it a complete mess. Keep
enough of white space to maintain clarity and readability.
b.
Try to keep font large enough to
read. Most of the times people who are going to read your résumé s are well
experienced and aged enough to have thick lenses on their eyes. So keeping a
bit large font will do no harm.
c.
Most of us find “Times New Roman” to
be pretty slick. Well, at times it do appears slick but when it comes to clear
readability “Arial” or “Calibri” might earn an extra point for you.
d.
Keep it short, employers get hundreds
and thousands of résumé s each day and they can’t spend time enough to read 4-5
pages of your résumé s. A résumé of one
and half page or at most two is an ideal choice.
e.
Keep things separate. You may use separate
text boxes to keep different things in order.
5.
Make yourself reachable
Would you like to know that you were
selected but your employer could not reach you? Believe me, it happens at times.
So provide your most reachable address, contact
number and email ID clear enough in bolds. Along with that keep a latest formal
photograph of yours (mostly at top right corner). Although you will not be
selected for your looks (until you are applying for modelling) but now a day’s its common (rather important) to have your image in
your résumé . Such résumé s are essentially preferred over those who don’t have
images.
6. The Final
Step
Your résumé is something that you expect will provide you a
job. Before being read by your employer your résumé may have to pass through various hands. You
will always want it to reach as safe as possible. So never compromise on the
paper and printing quality. Send your résumé well kept in a folder. You may like to send
your résumé with a Cover letter. If you don’t
have an idea of cover letter you can read it here.
Hope this post clarifies your doubts and helps you write
an impressive résumé . For any further queries please feel free to comment.
